The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) oversees biological agent use in research conducted at or on behalf of Northwell Health. The IBC ensures that research involving these agents is conducted in a manner that protects researchers, laboratory personnel, human research subjects, the public and the environment ensuring compliance with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guidelines, federal and state regulations, and institutional policies.

Northwell Health has two authorized IBCs registered with the NIH Office of Biotechnology Activities (OBA) – Office of Science Policy reviewing basic science, pre-clinical, and clinical research using biological agents. These committees also function as the Institutional Review Entity (IRE) for research considered Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC). The dates of Northwell Health’s IBC meetings are listed below.
